Rendering Pro Ress
Posted by Iain Johnston on November 29, 2010 at 7:16 pmHopefully someone will be able to help me, I have a Mac Pro 3.06GHz Core 2 Due with 4GB Ram using FCP 7.03 I film using XDCam and import to FCP using XDCam Transfer or L and T. My Sequence settings are HDTV 1080i and my Render settings are Apple Pro Res 422.
When I have finished doing my edit I render my timeline, this can take 2 to 3 hours, no effects only the odd crossfade and some basic titling will be used. Once the render has been done I then export using QTM – changing the settings to App Pro Res 422 LT this again takes around 2 hours when using self-contained, a ref file is slightly quicker but not much! I have also left the settings to Current and the same lenghty wait applies!
The waiting around is stressing me out, why is it taking so long am I doing something wrong!
any help would be welcome.
Cheers Iain

November 29, 2010 at 7:34 pmYou haven’t mentioned how long your finished sequence is.
Why are you changing your export to Prores LT? If you simply left it at ProRes 422 it would take only seconds to complete.

November 29, 2010 at 7:58 pmHi David
Thanks for the quick reply, sorry my render settings are Apple Pro Res 422LT – my projects are weddings and around 90min to 120min in length. when I export a QTM I’m not sure whither to use current or apple pro res 422lt !
either way it takes for ever!

November 29, 2010 at 8:42 pmNow you’ve got me very confused… You original post said: “Once the render has been done I then export using QTM – changing the settings to App Pro Res 422 LT.”
If exporting using Export>>Quicktime Movie you shouldn’t have to change a thing. Just check self contained and go for it. It should produce a QT file identical your sequence much faster than realtime.

November 29, 2010 at 9:28 pmHi David
Even I am confused I think I’m using the wrong settings! i have been making my sequence the same as my clip excam 1080i wham I’m ready to export for some reason it either wants to conform the footage, which again takes forever. So what I have been doing is setting my render to apple pro res 422Lt, my footage the need render and this takes 2 to 3 hours. After the render process has ended I then export to QTM and I change my setting from current to Apple Pro Ress 422Lt, this normally takes 2 hours, the into compressor to down convert to sd using best 120 min this takes about 5 hours,
I think from raiding forums that I should be making a Pro Res 422Lt timeline, dropping my footage into this and redeeming the footage before I start the edit! And at the end of the edit I would export QTM and tick make self contained, and within a few minutes I would have a QTM to drop into compressor. Is that correct!

November 29, 2010 at 10:28 pm[iain Johnston] “So what I have been doing is setting my render to apple pro res 422Lt”
Explain this step to me in detail please.
Instead, simply go to Sequence>>Settings and change the QuickTime Video Settings to Apple ProRes 422, then re-render. After doing that every export from the sequence using Quicktime Movie will be a ProRes 422, identically matching your timeline in every way.

November 29, 2010 at 10:58 pmHi David
thanks for the reply, In future should I set up a Apple Pro res Sequence and drop my footage into that! and then render the footage before I start the edit! I presume that I don’t need to change settings in the render control!
How long should it take to render a 90min timeline using a Mac Pro 3.06 Intel Core 2 Due is 2 to 3 hours about write

In theory, if you set your RT settings properly you can edit without rendering. See the little RT to the left, above the timeline. Set it to unlimited RT and set Playback Video Quality to “Dynamic.” That should give you realtime without rendering. If not, set the Playback Frame Rate to dynamic as well.
[iain Johnston] “I presume that I don’t need to change settings in the render control!”
Correct!
[iain Johnston] “How long should it take to render a 90min timeline using a Mac Pro 3.06”
A lot faster.

November 30, 2010 at 11:46 amDavid is bang on…
However…
Can you explain to me though why you aren’t editing in the native XDCAM Codec (eg. XDCAM HD422) your vision is recorded in?
In fact – what sort of XDCAM media ARE you using – and why aren’t you editing in that?
What do you print to – just a Quicktime file? No disc media?
FCP allows you to set the sequence settings nicely – drop the first XDCAM Clip onto your new timeline and it should prompt you if you would like to match the clip codec in your sequence.
That should be even nicer for you than editing in Apple ProRes – unless there is a specific and valid reason for you.

November 30, 2010 at 7:39 pmHi David
I have been working in the xdcam format ie dragging the clip to the timeline. However I have been changing the render control to pro res 422Lt which means I have to render everything at the end of my edit which takes about 2 hours.
I then output to QTM but have been changing the settings from current to pro res 422lt which again takes 2 hours.
I will follow your instructions on my next edit.
Thanks for your help and advise.
Cheers Iain J

There’s definitely an extra and unnecessary step in your procedure…
Glad to help, and good luck,
