Rendering PNG with alpha PROBLEMS!!!
Posted by Joe Walker on October 29, 2008 at 3:26 pmHey all,
In AE CS3 I created an “info matte” out of a bunch of footage I imported and I need to export a still of it to lay over some video in FCP. If I render it out as a quicktime with alpha it works fine, but if I render it out as a PSD, PNG, TIF, TGA, etc. it never lets the alpha through, it just keeps showing the background that I cut out in the video. Totally weird, any help would be appreciated.

October 29, 2008 at 3:58 pmyeah I’ve been doing that and all the ones I chose support alpha and I always choose it, I’ve tried both pre-multiplied and straight. What’s weird is if I make this overlay a quicktime animation with alpha, everything goes fine, it’s when I try to make it a still that things get screwey!

October 29, 2008 at 8:20 pmdo you have photoshop? if so, open the png in there and see if there is transparency (or if you tried a tif or tga, see if there is an alpha channel in the channels).
or, just bring the file back into ae and se if ae sees the alpha or transparency.
it may be that the image is getting handled improperly by fcp. after trying the tests above, you’ll know better what you need to be troubleshooting…

October 29, 2008 at 9:29 pmSo after much experimentation, I had to do the following:
1. Render out as a PSD with alpha.
2. Import into final cut and go to “Modify”, “Alpha”, and set it to black.
3. Bingo, problem solved.I will throw this at you guys to show you all what I’m talking about. Do the following:
In AE
1. Create a solid of any color.
2. Click the mask tool until its in the star shape.
3. Double click that and then set the mask to a subtract.
4. Render that out as a PNG with alpha and take in to FCP.
5. Notice that the star shaped alpha channel is there and you can see your footage underneathe.6. Now go back in AE, create a new solid in a new comp.
7. Click the mask tool until you have a rectangle.
8. Double click that and then set the mask to a subtract.
4. Render out as a PNG with alpha and take that into FCP.
5. Notice the solid shows up in FCP as though you never cut out the rectangular mask!!!!Why is this? Any guesses?
