Rendering Out HD
the last HD camera I used was a Panasonic w/ P2 cards went flawlessly…This time around I rented 3 Sony HVR-V1Us, because I can’t afford 3 panasonics…well needless to say I never realized what a headache I’ve created…
Had to Capture with Vegas…now I’m trying to render out, to work with the file in AE, BUT it’s messing with the aspect ratio on me…

Hi Rob,
This drives me nuts too and it’s an After Effects “thing”. The problem is that After Effects doesn’t adjust for the Pixel Aspect Ratio of video. I forget how I solved this in AE (I’m on my laptop right now and AE is on my desktop). I may have manually created a 1920×1080 comp and dropped the 1440×1080 footage into it but one definite solution is to render your files as 1920×1080 for AE. There is no difference in quality between 1440×1080 PAR 1.3333 and 1920×1080 PAR 1.0 because 1440 x 1.3333 = 1920. So render your files as 1920×1080 for work in AE and you should be fine.
I’m sure someone with AE knowledge can tell you how to get 1440×1080 files to display properly but it escapes me and as I said I don’t have my AE here to play with. Maybe ask in the AE forum?

it’s not just AE, in vlc and windows media…the file is showing up squished too…

I’m not sure why you would blame Sony because some software isn’t smart enough to support the HDV standard. Canon makes HDV cameras too. Are they to blame as well? How about JVC, they have HDV cameras. Perhaps they are part of an evil plot?
It’s a software problem, not a camera problem. HDV is a standard. Programmers should be smart enough to read a spec and support the standard.
Sony has plenty of cameras that shoot 1920×1080. Rent one of those next time. It’s not a Sony problem.
