  • Rendering only the reflections, no floor

I have a scene with a sphere sitting on a floor. The floor has reflection with dispersion. I only want to render out the reflection on the floor, not the reflection and the floor. Is this possible?

Do I need to add a transparency to the floor?

Or if there is a way to render out the reflection on the floor and then use a “multiply” transfer mode in after effects?

Enable the reflection pass in the render>multipass settings and specify a file name/location. Then give your floor a compositing tag and enable an object buffer. Finally, add an object buffer pass in the multipass settings. The object buffer is just an alpha for the floor.

That will allow you to knock out the rendered floor and replace it with just the reflection.

still doesn’t work. the object buffer pass is blocking out the whole floor. it’s almost as if it doesn’t see the reflection.

    here is an example

Mm, I don’t think you understood. The object buffer is to knock out the floor. Then you have to composite the reflection pass on top of that.

the reflection pass i rendered out is a black screen with only the reflection on it. the object buffer does block out the floor, but it doesn’t help isolate the reflection. i just want the reflection with alpha so i can composite over a white solid in after effects.

here is the file to look at.
