I have asked similar questions before about rendering however I am still really confused. Please help me in ‘layman’s’ terms.

    (a) I have 100’s of hours of footage in mpeg2, pal, 4:3, format.
    (b) I want to compress so that I have more room on the hard drive, and ALSO so that any teacher can use on any machine (pc or mac) so something very ‘readable’ please. Teachers are coming back to me now saying they don’t have DVD drives. So I’m wanting to put onto usb. At this stage online streaming is not available due to various in-house reasons.
    (c) I have Vegas 13.
    (d) I dropped an mpeg2 file into the timeline. answer the question ‘ do you want Vegas to use the project settings from this footage (or something similar)’ “yes”.
    (e) Then immediately I tried ‘render as’.
    (f) All the mp4 options were greyed out. I couldn’t choose any of them.
    (g) I use mpeg2/pal/4.3 purely because that’s all I know! If something else will work please let me know. I think most teachers will use on an electronic whiteboard to view or a pc or mac. however if they use a dvd player, pal is the useable format in australia.
    (h) Please advise if you think I should compress in some other way.

    Thank you.

There is just so much wrong with your proposed workflow, that I don’t know just where to start.

You have to make a custom template because Sony doesn’t have any good MP4 templates for PAL.

    Here’s how:

    1. Select File | Render As…
    2. Make sure that “= Match Project Settings” is NOT checked
    3. Double-click on Sony AVC/MVC
    4. Select the template Memory Stick SD NTSC – 6256 Kbps
    5. Press the Customize Template… button
    6. Change the Frame size to: PAL 720×576
    7. Change the Template name to: Memory Stick SD PAL – 6256 Kbps
    8. Press the Save icon (diskette)

Now render with this template and see if it works as you had expected.

I would bypass vegas and get a copy of Handbrake. Handbrake should be able to convert all your files using the built in batch function. Try the normal profile and check web optimized. Verify the video is looking normal to you.

That’s not a bad idea. If you just want to do a straight conversion, Handbreak is probably an easier solution.

Personally, I use Sorenson Squeeze, I’ve used it in the past to convert from Pal to NTSC and it worked great once I got the settings I wanted…
