    I have an old version 8 of Sony Vegas editor and need to render
    some MP4 files to Mpeg2 DVD compatible format.
    The final files will go on DVD’s.
    I still have Win XP Pro with 2 gigs of RAM (I know I’m a dinosaur..)
    The first test I did was with a 140 megs MP4 video file
    (around 50 min.). Vegas took around 3 hours to render
    the video and ended with a 2.2gigs file !!!!
    Starting from 140megs to end with 2.2gigs… oooofff !
    My question is what is the best/fast way to render MP4 files
    to put them on a DVD (DVD Architect for example).
    Render to what format if not MPG2 ?

    Your 140mb MP4 is 50mins? My 141mb is only 17 seconds. Sounds like you’ve got some hefty compression going on.

    Just for evidence based results:

    Time took 8 seconds for 141mb MP4 >>> 9.9mb MPEG2

    A 59 minute MP4, 890mb took 16 minutes.

    So, you need to find out what is hiding inside that MP4 and what your Project Setting are set to. There’s some major heavy lifting going on.

    MP4 is only an envelope. It’s what is inside that counts.

    I downloaded the file. It is 236MB, not 140MB. I downloaded the 480 sized version. Maybe you had a smaller version like 360.

    This is very compressed but that is not the point.

    You want to convert to mpeg-2. When converting to something else you want to keep the same visual quality without an excessively large file. This all comes down to video bitrate. Bitrate determines the file size, NOT the type of video codec like AVC or mpeg-2. Now it gets more technical. Some codecs are more efficient at compressing than others. MPEG-4 AVC/H.264 is better at compression than MPEG-2. How much? That is a debate in itself but the dogma is around 2x better for AVC over mpeg-2.

    What does that mean to you. This video is 555Kb/s bitrate AVC so maybe try 1Mb/s mpeg-2 for this example. This assumes you are keeping the video size the same. In this example 640×480.

    The final judge is always your eyes and only trial and error and experience will let you know how low a bitrate you can use to get the video quality you desire.

    and selected:

    I use the YTD Video Downloader and used “best available” for the file download quality. Looking at that video, 480 (640×480) is the largest version available. Your download was 480×360 which is one size smaller.

    Thank you guys !
    I’ll try tonite a MPG2 rendering using constant video bitrate of around 1mb/sec keeping the 640×480 aspect ratio
    and check the final result (pleasing or not…)

    Another thing to consider is that if you are Using Sony’s DVD Architect to create the DVDs you can just drag and drop your MP4 file straight into the DVDA program and it will create the DVD no bother
