  • Rendering keyed footage without the comp background

I need to render footage that I’ve chroma keyed in AE (using Primatte) so that I can do some specific color work in Davinci Resolve. But when I render out of AE I get the color background established in the comp settings, not simply the keyed image. It does seem to work to key out the background color of the clip after it’s rendered back out of DR, but it feels pretty klugy, plus that background color makes the color work more difficult. Any thoughts on how to get just the key, and nothing but the key?

    Thanks

Either render out the key in a black/white format in another media file and composite with davinci, or render out to a format that accepts alpha. .mov .png for example.

Not only does it have to be .mov, but the codec (not just the wrapper) needs to support alpha. ProRes 4444, for example, or Animation.

    Thanks Cassius

Your post sent me looking a little deeper. Clicking “lossless” in the AE render cue brings up “Lossless with Alpha”. Hooray! The clip renders out with a black background but composites cleanly in DR.

    Cheerfully
