Rendering Just a blur and alpha channel….
Posted by Mark Pybus on March 19, 2007 at 3:39 pmHi there,
I’ve tracked a blur over a logo in AE. Upon export out of AE, I’m having problems a tiny size difference between the original footage and my export (not sure why that is). Anyway, my question is, is there a way to render just the blur so that I can lay the tracked blur over my original source footage in the Avid. I’ve currently applied the blur (using a mask) to and adjustment layer in AE, but when I render just this, I get nothing.
Thanks a million!

March 19, 2007 at 4:29 pmYou can’t render a blur, you can only render a blurry image. Like a blurry logo or blurry footage.
Sorry, I don’t know enough about your project to suggest a solution. You’re going to have to re-do something, the logo, the footage, or something else.

March 19, 2007 at 4:37 pmcould you just apply your blur and your mask to your logo layer? then the blurred logo would be getting ‘cropped’ by you mask and you could then render with alpha and place on top of your original footage.
as far as the size shift, are both avid and ae set the same size? sometimes one can be set at dv (720×480) and the other d1/601 (720×486) and that can create a slight shift.

It seems that no matter what I do, there is a slight shift after I import my AE file back into the Avid. My Avid export settings are SAME AS SOURCE, RGB COLOUR LEVELS and NATIVE DIMENSIONS. My AE comp settings are 720 x 486 D1/DV NTSC(0.9) and the export settings are Quicktime Movie, Avid DV codec (I’ve also tried animation).
This is really driving me NUTS!
Thanks in advance.

March 19, 2007 at 6:59 pmyour output setting of avid dv codec would tell me your working in dv which would make me think your comp should be dv standard 720×480 rather than d1 standard 720×486.
select the footage in your ae project window, the little preview at the top should also give you the dimensions. does this match your comp?

March 19, 2007 at 9:01 pmI actually switched to the Avid DV codec (with no luck) after Animation was giving me the “size problem”. I’m working with a 1:1 “uncompressed” resolution. I’ve checked the footage settings and they match my comp settings exactly (720 X 486).
I’m pretty much at a loss to explain why this is happening. Very frustrating!

March 19, 2007 at 9:27 pmyeah that’s starnge and frustrating…
have you tried rendering out to the omf format (rather than quicktime)? in the output module, click lossless, then where it says quicktime, pulldown to omf. then you can set the format options to match your avid settings.
likewise, i think you can render out from your avid to the same omf format, this way maybe you can eliminate any possible scaling that may be happening in the conversion at both ends.

I’ll give that a shot and hope for the best!
