I’m doing a travel video, recorded in HDV. Having assembled the project using Vegas pro 8.0, I want to create a DVD in DV widescreen resolution fron the timeline. When I render to MPG using any of the non HD choices (e.g. Architect NTSC widescreen, DV NTSC, etc.) I get pronounced jagged edges trailing motion objects or during a pan (none particularly fast). Looks bad but scenes with little or no motion are OK. I tried chang to highest bit rate CBR with no effect. I tried rendering in m2t at 1080 which looks fine, then transcoding to m2v using my Canopus procoder express which solves the problem.

Is this a known issue with Mainconcepts? I fiddled with a few other settings, but could not get it to improve. My solution seems too cumbersome. Anyone have any thoughts on how to tweek Mainconcepts to minimize this problem? Are there any other encoders which can be applied in Vegas which are better?

You may want to make sure that the field order is being changed properly from upper field first for HD to lower field first for SD. Other than that, I first thought it may have been a rolling shutter issue with the cam used as opposed to the software however you ruled that out.

Is the field order something that the encoder should do automatically, or should I have to change it when rendering to a different format?

It should do it automatically but that doesn’t mean it always does. I have had this issue in the past. I always check to make sure it is set to what it should be set to now.

Checked that, and it is setting it correctly. Any other thoughts. Also, is there any way to bring in TPA’s such as procoder as a plugin to Vegas. Sure would make life easier.
