    Hey all –

Hoping someone out there knows a solution to our problem here. We are using FCP 5.0.1 and whenever we render out a still of any type (we’ve tried PSD, TIFF, TARGA, PNG) in the timeline it looks very blocky when viewed through and external monitor and on screen. Started noticing this problem right away when opening older FCP 4.5 projects, we chose Best in the new motion rendering settings, rendered it out and eventually went back to Linear which looked great…nice and crisp, sharp edges and color. Even with projects created in FCP 5, with settings set to best, the images are blocky and linear ends up looking the best.

I’ve read Larry Jordan’s article on using images in FCP 5(https://www.larryjordan.biz/articles/lj_fcp5_stills.html) and tried his technique on our problem sequences but it was not resolved. Our sequence settings are set up for DV50 material, we’ve tried different compression settings (regular DV, 8bit UC, 10bitUC) all with the render settings to Best, Normal and Linear and in each one, linear is the best.

We still have one machine using FCP 4.5 here and tried opening a trouble project in that version and it looks great, like it always has.

Im sure I must be doing something wrong here b/c the boards arent exploding with people complaining about this…can anyone shed some light on our troubles?

    System info:
    Dual 2.5 G5
    10.4.2
    QT 7.0.2
    FCP 5.0.1

    Thanks all,

Do you have the dark green FULL bars checked in your Sequence>Render menus prior to rendering? Are you in Safe RT? Full Frame playback? Are your graphics on whole, even numbers?

    Kevin-

Thanks for your reply. I’ve got a yes to all your questions. I should also mention that I have trashed prefs numerous times.

Just to confirm though, your PSD’s et al look BETTER in FCP 5 with the new motion settings than they did in 4.5? I know they probably do or, like I said, the boards would be exploding with complaints.

    Thoughts?
