rendering in Media Encoder Alpha channel not working
Posted by Tylor Larson on June 13, 2014 at 8:19 pmI keep running into issues with media encoder not rendering an alpha channel for my projects. I’m using DNx HD codec. it seems like no matter what i do it refuses to render correctly… it just doesn’t make an alpha channel… has any one run into this issue before? if so what did you do to fix it?

June 13, 2014 at 8:50 pmIn which app do you want to reimport the DNxHD clips? Depending on the app, importing the Alpha from DNxHD can be a little tricky sometimes.

June 16, 2014 at 2:27 pmThe Adobe apps do not understand DNxHD compressed alpha. When rendering DNxHD with alpha, make sure in the codec settings that you are using uncompressed alpha if you wish to use the output with an Adobe application.

June 16, 2014 at 8:02 pmLike Dave said. Make sure the settings on “output module” Channels:RNG+Alpha Color:Straight(unmatted)
Export as RAW AVI. Take that intermediary and import it in AVID with appropriate alpha settings (I’m assuming that is its final destination). Its also faster to do it this way than trying to export as DNxHD from AE.

July 2, 2014 at 11:36 pmI have been using compressed mattes in DNxHD for several years without a problem. Under AE CC it is now broken. This will dramatically increase the sizes of my files and I would regard this as a serious bug.

I agree it’s serious. Please file a bug report [link]. (I have filed mine.)
