Rendering HDV to .Wmv (Can’t Customize) – Capping As .Avi – and, of course — RENDER TIME! (Long Post)
In PP 2.0, I am trying to export an HD project (original format=mpeg, shot on a JVC-HD100) into the wmv format and I’m having a terrible time. Here are my issues:
1. When selecting the profile with which to export, I can’t seem to find the area that allows me to specify my bitrate for video. I see all of the presets, and even when I change to “Custom” I don’t seem to be able to change the video bitrate.
2. Using ANY of the HDV presets, the video takes OH SO LONG to render! 30 sec clip takes 12 minutes – is this normal? I’m running a Dual Core P4, 3.2Ghz, 4gb RAM, 7500 RPM dedicated SATA drive
3. Another weird thing: When I try to change the settings (instead of saving the file in its native resolution, I’ve tried to save it at — say — 720×480), the resulting files size doesn’t change. I’ve used Ulead in the past, and changing the output size resulted in smaller file sizes (and faster render times). Is this not the case with PP 2.0?
4. Downsampling – I also don’t seem to be able to figure out how to save my HDV as a .wmv SD file and customize the settings. Again, in Ulead this is easy, but the resulting video in Ulead is sub-par (jerky).
5. I don’t use a lot of FX (mostly simple transitions). Any advice on how to speed up the rendering process? PP 2.0 does an adequate job in SD, but HD rendering just blows.
6. One last thing: Since my camera will not export my HD file as an .avi (what were they thinking?), and since PP 2.0 will not capture the file as an .avi (WHAT WERE THEY THINKING???), is the only way to capture my HDV as .avi is by purchasing a Cineform product, and if so, which one?

Let’s start at the beginning and see if we can’t get you squared away.
1. Let’s start with a preset of WM9 HDTV 1080 60i 5.1 and change it to what we really want.
a. On the video tab, verify that the codec is Windows Media Video 9.
b. Change the frame width to 1280 and the Height to 720
c. Verify 29.97 if that is what you shot, and Square Pixels.
d. Scroll down and find the Average Video Bitrate and set it to 5,000 if you are playing off of a DVD-ROM or CD and maybe leave it at 8Mbps if playing it from a hard drive.My guess is that you didn’t realize you have to scroll down in that panel.
2. I have a faster PC and it still takes a long time to render HDV and to encode it to a new file.
3. The file size changes according to the bit rate not the frame size. Please note that the smaller the frame size the lower you can make the bit rate and get the same quality.
4. Changing the frame size was explained in step 1.
5. Rendering takes more time for HDV than DV. Just a fact of life.
6. Cineform Aspect HD will allow you to try it for 15 days. But be warned. It is so good you will want to pay the money. Don’t try it if you can’t afford it. It will only make you sorry you ever heard of it.
Keep in mind that Aspect HD will make editing easier, and you won’t render as often. However, you still need to render and exporting files takes just as long.

Thank you so much for the reply. You were correct: I was not scrolling down far enough in the video section to see the bitrate options. DOH!
Yes, I am aware that the bitrate determines the size of the final file. After making the adjustments per your recommendations, my results were much, much better.
As for Aspect, I am downloading it now. Your warning did not go unheeded!
