I have produced a video in 1440 x 1080 HD (interlaced, upper field first) for a client, and now I have to put it on a DVD (no option to go to Blu-Ray in this case).

So, as has been suggested to me previously in this forum, I decided to render the video, then “nest” the video in a new 720 x 480 SD project.

However, when I render the new video, the interlacing shows up horribly in certain shots, particularly on some of the stills that I used zoom and pan with. I have checked and made sure the project is set to “upper field first” and that the render settings match this.

Can anyone suggest what might be going wrong? I have nested before with no issues, but it was always with progressive scan video. Has anyone else ever tried nesting with interlaced video and ended up with this result?

Vegas will need to de-interlace the HD video, resize it down, then re-interlace for DVD output. Make sure you have the deinterlace method (project properties) set to “interpolate” or “blend” (try interpolate if you have lots of motion). Do NOT use “none” for deinterlace method.

You might also need to use the “reduce interlace flicker” switch – I believe that applies a slight softening/smoothing, but it might only work on still images.

All my shooting is in 1440×1080 @ 60i Upper Field first.
If I want to make a regular DVD, I set my project properties to NTSC DV Widescreen (720×480, 29.970 fps) and render.
I set DVDA to widescreen and make the DVD.
I’ve never had a bad DVD yet.

    Mike,

When you render to 720×480, what do you set the deinterlace method to?

Brian, I leave it at Blend.
I get the odd interlace artifact but it’s nothing I worry about.

When I need to make a dvd from an HD project, here’s what works best for me:

    Original AVCHD 1920×1080 60i
    SV11 Properties: HD 1080-60i (1920×1080, 29.970 fps)(default)

Render Video: Sony AVC (AVCHD 1920×1080-60i)Default except No Audio (this will result in .m2ts file)
Rendeer Audio: Dolby digital AC-3 Pro: Stereo DVD (default)

New project with same properties but import above rendered .m2ts file

Render: DVD Architect NTSC Widescreen video stream (Default except constant bit rate 8,000,000 bps)
Use previously rendered audio (same filename/ same location)

I’ve tried numerous other methods but nothing works better for me as far as quality & speed.

However, if someone can suggest a better method, I’m open to giving it a try!
