Rendering H.264
Ok I want to host videos that will stream from Amazon S3 server and play them on a blog with JWplayer. I’m told I need to render in H.264.
Up to now I have been using the Video4YouTube plugin (which I love), but I cannot find out how to make that render in H.264.
Also, I don’t even know how to tell if a rendered video is in H.264 format or not.
Can someone help me with this?

AVC = H.264
therefore, Sony AVC and MainConcept AVC are the encoders for your needs.
MainConcept AVC supports the streaming feature for MP4 files. This allows a video to start playing before fully downloaded. You can do this to any MP4, but you use another utility program to modify the file.

Video4YouTube renders your video with Sony AVC. It produces H.264 video in MP4 wrapper.

IF I use the “Fast Start” option for Video4YouTube, do I still need something like MP4 fast start?
The reason I ask is because my video plays in slow player but is EXTREMELY SLOW.

Why is this video playing so slowly? I rendered it in Video4YouTube and checked the Fast start option there.
What is the problem?

What is the bitrate of the MP4 file?
I only seem to be getting 70,000 bytes per second from the server. That is certainly a problem for video streaming.

It depends on the bitrate.
Do you use plain Amazon S3 server for hosting or Amazon S3 + Cloudfront (CDN)?
S3 is fast but it’s not as fast for hosting high bitrate videos. Try to render with lower quality (e.g Good).Probably, Video4YouTube is not the best option for low-bitrate videos. You can try Handbrake.
Why Amazon S3? You can host your video on YouTube/Vimeo and don’t worry about bitrates, network speed etc.

Hi Norman – I’m not sure. I just rendered it through the Video4YouTube plugin. By “server” do you mean my hostgator server or the Amazon s3 account? The video is on Amazon S3.

Aleksey – thanks for the bit rate advice.I will try that. I am using S3 because the videos will be going into a membership site.

“server” I mean whatever is sending me the video file. It may or may not be different than the server sending me the video file. I am using the Chrome browser and I was watching the amount of data received per second by Chrome in the Windows 7 resource monitor.
Peoples internet connections are typically not very fast so you better know what bitrates you are encoding your video to. I am assuming the Amazon S3 will let you serve whatever bitrate you want from a video file. I say this since services like Youtube, Vimeo, Smugmug all re-encode videos to their own standard bitrates.
