March 9, 2008 at 3:17 amIf you don’t render “Full” it’ll render again as you export. Its kinda like, “you can pay me now, or pay me later…” Its a remnant from the old days when machines were much slower and people wanted to show a preview of their rendered work to clients. Check “full” always…

March 9, 2008 at 11:05 amnow what if you want to work more quickly or efficiently (to maximize my MBP with an external firewire drive), shouldn’t you work in a lesser render mode.
I’m experimenting with editing in offline quality render settings (25% frame rate and resolution, draft quality, etc.) then switching to online settings (100% frame rate and resolution, draft quality, etc.) just before sending the edit to compressor.
it works okay, but since i nest my cuts in sub-sequences, i have to go back and change the settings in all my sub-sequences too. Which is a pain. I wish there were a master switch to turn on and off line render mode.

March 9, 2008 at 1:18 pm“Full” quality is FCP thinking that it’s so hot it can play the effected video back at, well full quality.
a real time save if you are laying out to tape.
IF it works.
I’ve seen too many instances of so called “Full” quality being improved with a render, i now have the grey “Full” setting ticked in my Sequence Menu > “render All” selections.as for exporting, well, like any render, NEW video needs to be created.
if you DONT render it, it will be rendereed as part of the export.
so the epxport takes longer.
(and if you are making a reference movie, the full stuff will be rendered and included in the ref)then if you decide to export again, (you change the copyright date, say)
the export STILL takes longer as it still has to render all the “Full” quality stuff.so there’s another reason to keep “Full” quality ticked in the “Render All” settings.

Get a faster machine, give up your firewire drive for a SATA raid, make shorter videos, period, end of story…
