Rendering for use on stage – which format?
I’m in a band, and we use both live instruments and sequenced audio tracks, that we play from a laptop on stage. With the same laptop, we want to simultaneously play video’s next to the music.
I chose Sony’s Vegas Movie Studio Platinum for this use. I can play multiple audio tracks alongside video files from one laptop.
In order to let the video play as smoothly as possible, I render the video sequence to a single file for each song. What’s the best format to use? If I render to an uncompressed Quicktime file, then I get a 14 GB video file, audio not included. If I would use that, I can’t put all the video’s we’re using in the live set on one harddrive!
When I render the same video sequence into a Quicktime file with a Sorensen codec, then it’s 120 MB eventually. That seems to be okay – on a 19″ screen, it’s hard to tell the difference in quality. I can’t really tell if there willl be a difference noticable when it’s played on stage on a huge screen, though. With that file size difference, I imagine there should be.
Can anyone suggest what settings I should use for the video file – the best compromise between file size, quality and CPU load?

I’d personally render to DV-AVI.
It’s a codec Vegas likes so it should play just fine for your needs. -
As Mike said – Render to DV-AVI. I have done exactly this with singers lip synching to a video. Vegas was playing the video and recording eight mics at the same time.
Quicktime is encoded, not rendered. When you play it back, the processor has to decode it, and could cause some stuttering.
