rendering for upload to festivals
have the core of a film shot and roughly edited, 63mins, avchd, canon vixia hf s200 which is hd, not huge sensor though.
used vegas on new pc tower w 8g ram, midlevel nvidia card, 650ti I believe, oc version around 1000 rendered to quicktime, watch it, it was good for a few seconds, then mush.
should I retry?
the limit for withoutabox online screener is 2G

what are other names for sorenson or vp6 that might show up on vegas if I don’t see them? -

Yes, I would use MainConcept AVC using the “Internet 480p” template. You can adjust the bit-rate to get as close to 2Gb as possible.

ok, thank you so much John, I assume that will output into what the site says they accept? it’s one of the approved codecs? if you had to guess which bitrate would work, where’s a good place to start to keep the whole thing under 2G? there are no fancy fx/no cgi, just some basic titles for a few seconds. when I rendered it to qt it was tiny, as well as mushy.

You know I just went back and looked at your post and they do say Sorenson 3 so that will not produce that. What I suggested will produce AVC/H.264 just for future reference.
If you need to send them Sorenson 3 in a MOV file, then use QuickTime with the 3 Mbps Video template. That will produce Sorenson 3 at 3Mbps as the template name implies. I would press the Customize Template button and change the Frame Rate to match the rate of your video. You might need to change the Frame Size as well. Then save this template and call it something like “SD Festival Submission”.

I wouldn’t “guess”… I would calculate and that calculation is dependant on the length of your video. Use one of the many BitRate Calculators floating around the Internet.

Thank you. Ok, I will do the QT sorenson.
Again, I did try QT once and it was mush. Maybe sorenson is a better qt codec for avchd or vegas.
my first q was, should I just do it again as QT? is that normal, that sometimes the computer just makes a mistake? or is my card too low end? or the ram is too low?
I have no preference on what codec whether QT or Sorenson 3, just want it to be basically viewable, audible and under 2G to get viewed for fest consideration. thanks for the tip on the calculators -

Computers rarely make mistakes. People make mistakes… computers just do as they are told. Do it again using the settings I suggested and see what quality you get.

The quality of your output has nothing to do with your computer. It all comes down to codecs and bitrates.

You need to make sure of what the festival cares about. If they don’t care, then use MP4 AVC/H.264 as I originally recommended. If they want Sorenson 3 in a MOV container then that’s what you need to give them.
