Hello, I’m hoping someone can point me in the right direction. I have 45 second video shot in 1920×1080 24p, and I’d like to take this and put it on my website as a much smaller, but still high quality flash video. I’m using Vegas Pro 8 and am wondering what container I should render this video in, and do i need to render with a smaller resolution as well? I have taken previous videos that were 1440×1080 24p wmv and converted those to 680×360(whatever the 16:9 ratio was) flvs and while they look nice, they’re just not ‘great’. Obviously I want to keep file size down as much as possible and I’ve read somewhere about editors that have youtube videos that are around 800Kpbs and manage to be HD, even when maximizing screen size on playback. Or is the problem the software I’m using to go from wmv to flv? Should I go for H.264 instead? I’ve been editing for about 6 months now and while I’m getting editing technique down I still have relatively no idea about encoding and container formats. Thanks for any help!

That would be the first problem area. WMV is a highly compressed delivery format. You do not want to use this to convert to FLV. You want a lossless format like uncompressed, Lararith, or Huffyuv. Both Lagarith and Huffyuv are free lossless codecs that you can download and install and they will show up under the AVI custom options.

Personally, I would render to mp4 using the Sony AVC codec and forget about Flash. Since you shot 1080 and want a smaller format I would delivery in 720p. This is a good trade-off in size vs quality and is supported by sites like Vimeo and YouTube.

Thank you for your help! The only thing is that I have set up a flash file to play this video. Vegas only offered 1440×1080 or 1920×1080 50i as its choices, and my 24p video is for internet playback only. I would really like to use flash, as it allowed me to build a video player for my webpage. Is there something else you recommend? Or can I convert a .avc file somehow to an .f4v?

Ok, I figured out how to go into custom options to make it render as .mp4 and not .avc and frame rate of 24frames/sec. Only problem is I’m getting slightly jumpy playback on my computer. I’m assuming it’ll be worse on the internet? Also, I still had no option for 720p. Only 1920×1080, 1440×1080, or 720×480 (or smaller). Or am I just retarded and one of those options is 720p (thought 720p was 1280×720?).

Did you use 1080? That’s why I said use 720 so it won’t be jumpy. Also keep the bit-rate down to about 3Mbps.

In Vegas Pro 9.0 set the video format to AVC and select the frame size of High definition (1280×720).

I would have if I could. I’m still on Vegas 8 and there’s no option for 1280×720. Is there a way for me to enter dimensions manually? All I’ve seen in the custom boxes is more presets.

I don’t have Vegas 8 installed anymore. If it can’t be done then it can’t be done. This is why you should keep your software up to date; so that you have all of the latest features.

Thank you for help, and although I would love to have all the latest features we cannot afford to upgrade. I was hoping that someone might have some knowledge about if I could change dimensions or if I was limited to presets. Anyone out there still using Vegas 8?

Heather, the trick is to select Custom frame size in the Frame size: dropdown box.
And yes, this is in Vegas 8 Pro.
