  • Rendering EX1 FOOTAGE IN SONY VEGAS

    Hi Guys,
I am looking for advice, when I import my MP4 files from my EX1 camera
into Sony Vegas, what would the best settings you would use to render
your MP4 Footage ? The settings would have to be capable for widescreen TV and the pal region. After the rendering is complete I would move the
rendered file into Sony Architect. After this is done what settings would you set in Sony Architect to achieve the best DVD ?

Any answers or suggestions would be much appreciated.

What option you use in the “render as” menu really depends on how it going to be played. In HD, there is no “PAL” or “NTSC”, just 50i or 60i.

A DVD is MPEG2, 720×480 with a pixel aspect ratio of 4:3 or 16:9 for widescreen.

The general rule is to shoot and edit in HD and step down to SD only when you encode the file for DVD.

Hi Steve, would you follow this process

    1) Before importing the MP4 into Sony Vegas, you set the Project Properties. The properties for video are : Template HD 1080-50i and the Full resolution rendering quality is set to Best.
Next the properties for audio are ; Sample Rate HZ (44,100). Resample and stretch quality is set to Best

    2) After finishing the project’s edit, render the format to be XDCAM EX (mp4) HQ 1920*1080-50i,35 Mbps VBR, Is this the right format or is there a better format. Note I am using a pc.

    3) After the above format has been rendered, bring rendered project into Sony Architect and set the properties to MPEG2, 720×480 with a pixel aspect ratio of 16:9 for widescreen

Anyone who else wants to join the conversation, please do

Lorcan – you were good up to step two and seven eighths.

First you don’t render MPEG, you encode it, notwithstanding that Vegas puts the encode commands in the “Render As” window.

Your process introduces a needless encoding step. When you re-encode an encoded format, you compromise quality. Finally, there is NO option to change the DVD project properties from MPEG2, 720×480. All DVDs are MPEG2, 720×480. Select a pixel aspect ratio of 16:9 for widescreen.

You shoot and edit in HD as far as possible. When you are ready to make the DVD, then, and only then, encode the project into an MPEG2 video file and an AC3 audio file (using the same base name). Use the DVD Architect template in the “Render As” menus and your video will be exactly what DVDA wants.
