Howdy Folks… I am doing opening titles for a short film, it is about 1 minute long and the last few seconds have a transition to nothing – so I want to render it out with an alpha channel.

The complete render is 5,2 Gb :-/ with No compression…
That on itself is not a problem, but the file needs to go to Japan… So I am trying to make it smaller.

Any suggestions? I also tried Animation codec… but that leaves me with a 4Gb file… yikes!

    tnx

Try Microcosm fromn Digital Anarchy or if you have QT Pro on a Mac Pixlet. Alternatively separate Alpha and RGB and save them as separate files. This could yield substantial savings. For distribution you could use torrents. just make sure you conatin your stuff in na encrypted file so nobody else can access it.

Basically, to get a smaller file you will need to use a compressed/ lossy codec. The problem is that they don’t have alpha channels, so you’ll have to render the alpha separately and trust that the guys in Japan know what to do with it.

I would try rendering out your main project with the PhotoJPEG codec, and a premultiplied alpha. At 100% quality it is almost lossless, and you can go down to about 90% before seeing artefacts. The file size should be significantly smaller than the animation codec.

Then, render out your alpha channel only, using 256 greys and the PhotoJPEG codec again (make sure it’s set to 256 greys).

Thanks for that guys… I think I will render them out as a TGA sequence with alpha, and just upload a zipped file with 500 images at a time… I don’t want to risk things here ….

The torrent idea was also quite interesting…

    thanks again!
