I am editing a project using FCP 6.0.6 shot on multiple formats/cameras: XDCAM and 7D. When I bring in a clip from the 7D (which I first convert to Apple Pro Res HQ), the clip needs to be rendered before it can be viewed. Even text I create in FCP, once pulled onto the timeline, needs to be rendered before it can be viewed.

Is there a setting in FCP that will prevent me from having to render clips before they can be viewed?

Your timeline has to exactly match the footage to prevent being rendered.

Your machine / storage array needs to be fast enough to support realtime text effects.

As for the 7D material, no need for HQ. Regular ProRes will suffice.

Toggle on “Unlimited RT” … the setting is found in a popup menu when you press the “RT” button at top left of your timeline window. Note that the setting is only available if you are working in a natively supported edit codec.

Thanks for the tips. I’ll check into unlimited RT and timeline settings.
