Rendering a 4:3 DV project to 16:9 for Youtube
Hello all,
I know this question has been asked a number of times already and I’ve done my research, but I cannot find a simple enough description of what I need to do (newbie that I am).
I have a 1,3GB(!!!) AVI file that I shot 10 years ago on MiniDV and edited with Vegas. Now I want to upload it to Youtube/Vimeo, but it has 3 problems:
1) It is 4:3 (with upper and lower bands) and I want it to be 16:9
2) It is a bit dark
3) It is *huge*: 1,3GB for 5 minutes
So, what I did on my Vegas 11 is:
1) Open a new PAL DV project (720×576 – Pixel aspect ratio=1)
2) Load the AVI file
3) Event Pan/Crop: remove the horizontal bands and leave a 16:9 aspect. The new resolution is 720×405 (it fits the image perfectly).
4) Video effects -> Brightness/contrast -> increase both. The image is clearer.
After this is done, I’m STUCK. There seem to be various places where I could modify the project’s aspect ratio (in the project Properties or in the Render menu) and I don’t know what I’m doing at this point.
Again, what I want is to render the cropped video to an acceptable size (100MB or so, I guess) without the horizontal bands and with more brightness.
I’ve tried quite a few renders (MPG / AVI) and the resulting file is either enormous, or the wrong format (4:3) and still too dark (as if the brightness enhancement didn’t happen).
Could you please point me to a simple set of instructions to do this very basic task?

Start with a 16:9 project not a 4:3 project. Then crop the media to fit the project and render to 16:9. At that point everything will be 16:9.

Just as mr. Rofrano said, the only thing i will add is the detail that you crop the media using the pan and crop tools, and i suggest ( if you dont feel sure) to render a small segment just before rendering the whole thing just to be sure the output file will be like you want.
If something is wrong get back here to see whats the problem.
I remember myself struggling with this months ago, haha.

Try MainConcept AVC with the Internet HD 720p or Internet HD 1080p template. Those are designed for uploading to sites like YouTube and Vimeo.
