I’m new to Premiere and Video; old to editing stills (photoshop) and sound (audacity):

I’ve a good computer (PC), but it wasn’t designed for video editing. 4 GB RAM, Processor 2.1 or thereabouts, no separate scratch disk. I have an OK video card, not super fast or large (don’t remember the details) So here’s the problem:

When I place an effect, process, transition etc. on and then play the clip, it may hang up momentarily and not play smoothly. If I then render it, all’s well, but rendering may take a minute or so, making work very slow. It seems like I have to render every step. Is there anything I can do about inputting my material or am I merely suffering from inadequate hardware? I’m currently “trying” Premiere and Production Suite, and if everything were to move along at this pace, I’d probably not buy it. What do you suggest?

Are you editing DV HDV HD?

As far as inserting transitions and titles, the normal process would be to complete a good portion of your edit, save the project, the renders and take a break while you the system renders your effects.

Even the top machines need to render some effects and this is the process that we follow.

I’m just practicing/learning\Lynda-ing: The little clips are just DV, ones that just happen to be lying around my PC. Does the same hold for Effects–do you do those last then take a vacation when they’re rendering, as well?

And regarding “Education”: Lynda has been excellent. Do you have other recommendations for bending the learning curve favorably. What else is out there that will make a quantum leap in my understanding Premiere, Encore, Soundbooth, and possibly After Effects?

    Thanks
