    Hello

I recently reinstalled my software and I noticed that my rendered video from Sony Vegas is noticeably poor compared to the source video.

    As a test I:

Started with an MPG file. The properties of the file indicate it is
Type: MainConcept MPEG-2. It was recorded from TV (tivo). I’m pretty sure it’s 720×480 but the properties do not indicate.

    2. Then I just did a few edits to the file and went to File > Render As.

    3. I chose the type: “Main Concept MPEG-2” and the “NTSC DVD” setting. I figured this should be the same as the source file. I went into custom and made sure the Project was set to “Best” (the default was “good”). I also checked the video settings to make sure it is set to 720×480. I saved the template.

The resulting file is noticeably pixelated. The audio is fine and the motion is fine but the resolution is not. If there is a diagonal line, it appears jagged in the output file but it is smooth in the source file.

I tried rendering an AVI file and got the same results.

I think I was getting better results before I reinstalled everything (BTW, I completely reformatted of my hard drive and reinstalled all my software).

Can anyone suggest something I can check or try to improve my output? I should be able to get an output file that’s virtually the same as the input, right?

    thanks very much.

That workflow should have produced good results. Do you have an “codec-paks” or FDDShow, or any other “free” video software on your PC? They could be interfering with Vegas.

Having said that… the MPEG2 coming from a Tivo may be “marginal” in that it’s not too far away from degrading and the edit you did was enough to show considerable degradation. But in general, you should have gotten similar results to the original source.

no codecs or anything on the computer. it’s particularly clean right now because i just reformatted my HD and reinstalled just the basics.

(BTW I’m using Vegas Pro 8)

still searching for a solution. thanks for trying.
