  • Rendered, then lost file?

I just finished a low budget film. I have been editing for weeks. I just got done and clicked onto “Make Movie” and burn to DVD. It rendered the film, and took about an hour. (The film ran 50 minutes)

It rendered a second time which didn’t take near as long, then nothing happened. It just quit.

Now when I play the file to see what it looks like, it stops at 1 minute and 9 seconds and it’s done.

Now I Can’t Find The File Anywhere, and when I open Vegas, it shows up on the list, but says it can’t find the file. Ran a search and still says it can’t find it. What the sam hell is going on???? I have people waiting for their copy of this film. Please advise.

Update: Ok, sorry for the panic. I found the file and restored it. I had deleted a portion of another file that was somehow connected to the finished product. I restored it from the recycle bin (thank goodness I didn’t empty the bin)and it gave me the file back.

But now, I burned it to a DVD and there’s no sound when I play it. So I’m rendering another way to see if it works.

Why not render your video as mpeg2 and use a DVD Burning software,
like DVD Architect or other to burn it to disc…
Thats the best method i always recommend.

Thank you Steve. I actually did wind up going with MPEG2. Everything is fine except for it only plays on my computer and not a standard DVD player. Perhaps I need a different type of DVD or need to convert it.

You need to “author” a video DVD using your rendered MPEG2 video and AC3 audio files. If you just burn the file(s) directly to a DVD, you’ll only get a data DVD that happens to contain some video files, and that won’t play in a DVD player.

Assuming you have DVD Architect (usually part of the Vegas suite install), then render Mainconcept MPEG2 format video in Vegas using the appropriate DVD Architect template, then render the audio separately using the Dolby AC3 format and give the files the same name (apart from extension).

Then drop those into DVD Architect and burn the DVD from there. If you browse the DVD, you should see a VIDEO_TS folder containing several files like VTS_01_1.VOB.

Ok, I’m completely lost now, but that makes sense and I’m sure with the tutorials I can learn. Thank you Matt.

Well, I just re-read the first post and I see you were using the “Make Movie” feature. If you choose the “Burn it to DVD…” option, this takes care of the rendering in Vegas, and it will get you to a step that has a “Send to DVD Architect” button.

At that point, it has created a pair of files somewhere (the default seems to be in your Application Data folder, but you can choose a folder for Vegas to render the video and audio files to.

These 2 files are what you need in DVD Architect to create a video DVD. If you click the “Send to DVD Architect” button on the Make Movie wizard, the files are automatically inserted into a new DVD project and you can burn straight away or modify the DVD project.

Awesome Matt. I did go through that the first time and didn’t realize how it all worked, but getting it now. Thank you both for taking the time to help.
