Rendered MXF clips cannot be imported into Avid Media Composer 5.5.3
Hi,
I’m testing AAF roundtripping with Avid Media Composer 5.5.3 and DaVinci Resolve Mac 8.1 and the MXF files rendered out of Resolve cannot be imported into Avid as it says it is not supported. The rendered MXF files can be imported back into Resolve without any problem.
Basically what I did was to create a cuts-only PAL (720 x 576) sequence in Media Composer, exported a linked AAF and imported into Resolve. So far all is good so I did some grading and then in the Render Page, I selected Avid AAF Round0trip in the Easy Setup, and then I selected the Output Type as MXF UYVY422 PAL 8 bits. After this I exported the session as an AAF file.
When I import the AAF file into Avid, the sequence shows up as Media Offline.
When I attempt to import the Resolve rendered MXF files by dragging them into the bin window, it says it is not supported.
I compared the original Avid MXF files and the Resolve rendered MXF files and they have different icons and also the file size on the Resolve rendered MXF files are smaller. The rendered MXF files seems fine as I can open them up in Resolve itself. Somehow Avid just don’t understand it.
Any advise ?

You don’t import MXF files that way. You just copy them directly into the Avid MediaFiles/MXF/1 (or any other numbered folder). Do that before you launch Media Composer. Once copied, MC will index its MXF folders, and your AAF will link up automatically.

Question…must the folder inside the MXF folder always be a number ?
And if it’s only numbers, can it be double or triple number like 10 or 100 ?

you can use letters in your folder, but only after you’ve got the footage to work. Adding letters makes the folder read only.
I am currently working on a 4 day, 2 camera red shoot. For offline, i put each transcoded media clip into a corresponding MXF numbered folder. 1,2,3 and 4. After the program scanned and rebuilt the data base, i renamed each folder Day1, Day2 Day3 and Day4. The box allowed this because the database was already in place. Any new renders i bring in will now go into a new folder that Avid creates.

Can I move the MXF file from one hard drive to another with out messing up my timeline.

I’m running MC version 7 and DaVinci version 9.
I rendered mxf files out of DaVinci to a folder and exported aaf. I copied the folder in side the AVID MEDIA>MXF>1 folder and deleted the .pmr and .mdb files off of it. Avid automatically rebuilds the database and reads the files but when I import the AAF on AVID, the Media and sequence still shows offline. I’ve tried this a few times a little bit differently but I still cannot get the Media Files to cooperate.
Any ideas?

What happens if you import the msmMMOB.mdb file into the bin, do you see any clips? Typically issues here is that the REEL is not properly set in Resolve which gets translated into the TAPE field for Avid. See my blog here on this issue:

Once you import the msm file as per above, look at the TAPE column and see what it is displaying. Does it match the TAPE column from the AAF import?

you say you copied the folder inside the mxf/1 folder…does this mean you added another folder into that mix? You need to copy the files to the mxf/1 folder, or create a new folder with a new number and put your files there. mxf/2. Avid can’t read subfolders inside the “1” folder.
