  • Render video with surround sound in Vegas?

Posted by Mark Fjellstroem on December 21, 2014 at 2:51 pm

    Dear forum,

I’m very new to surround video but I want to render a self-contained video file (something like mp4 or mkv would be ideal) with at least four audio channels (5.1 will do fine). However I can’t find any codec in Vegas that will let me do this. Will I have to render video and audio (AC3?) files separately and then merge them in a 3rd party application? Or is there some codec / function in Vegas that I have overlooked?

    I’m using Vegas Pro 12.

    Many many thanks in advance.

Use the Sony AVC encoder. After you select a template like Internet 1920×1080-30p, press the Customize Template button, go to the Audio tab and select 5.1 Surround under Audio Coding Mode. You might want to save this as your “MP4 w/Surround” template.

Thank you so much John, I can’t believe I overlooked that specific encoder, this is exactly what I need. 🙂

Not your fault. Sony has one of the most convoluted methods of listing render templates that I’ve ever seen. I don’t know how anyone finds anything without a lot of hunting around. Glad I could help.

I also wanted to thank you, John, for this information. I had planned on playing around with surround sound renders during the Christmas break, and you just saved me a bunch of time! Thanks!!

I’m glad I could save you some time. I actually bought my first surround system for my HD TV this year and I haven’t gotten around to really figuring out how it works. Maybe I should do the same this holiday. lol 😉
