About the first think I was told about rendering out video was that bit rate was the thing that determined the quality of the out put, thus the higher the better.

I was surprised therefore when a friend asked about which codec to use to render out his first Blu Ray disc for 1920×1080. It seems that the default settings for Blu Ray & AVCHD are 16,000,000 & 10,000,000 respectively which suggests that the AVCHD file quality should result in the beat possible quality. Is this correct?

Would he be better off rendering to AVCHD for loading onto a media player rather than onto a Blu Ray disc? Further I assume the downside of doing that would result in not being able to have chapter points & menu’s.

    Thanks in advance

You can render AVCHD @ 16Mbps or MPEG2 @ 25Mbps and get about the same quality. Which you use it up to you. Obviously you can get more AVCHD video on a Blu-ray disc than MPEG2 at the same quality so if you are reaching the capacity of the disc with MPEG2, AVCHD would be a way to fit more video. Otherwise it doesn’t matter which you use. I use MPEG2 because that’s what my Sony Z1U camera shoots.

AVCHD would be better if you wanted to use a Media Player because it produces smaller files however you need a more powerful computer to play it back smoothly than you would need with MPEG2. You are correct that you loose chapter capability.
