render type for client?
Posted by Gilles Gagnon on June 16, 2011 at 10:17 pmA client needs the final edit of some videos I shot/edited in SD.
Although the final video will be for the web, I would like to provide the best quality so they can do as they wish with it.
My plan is to provide the rendered video files on DVD, or electronically if their size allows.
Which render template/setting should I select?
Thanks,
Gilles

Will this format be good enough quality for them to burn a DVD with?
Basically, I want to give them the best quality… they can downgrade themselves to suit their needs ie. Internet.

If you shot them in SD I assume you shot DV so why not render as DV AVI? That would be the same quality as your original.

June 17, 2011 at 5:46 pmThanks John, this is just what I was looking for. I’m still learning about all these various formats. I wasn’t aware that .avi is the same as “SD”.
Thanks again!
Cheers,
Gilles

It’s not so please don’t misread what I wrote. AVI is a container for 100’s of codecs including SD and HD.
What I said was: If you shot SD did you use a miniDV camera which shoots DV? If yes, give your client DV. If no, then you still don’t have a solution.
SD (which I assume you mean “Standard Definition”) is a relative term and not a “format” per se’. If you tell us exactly what format / codec, resolution, you shot at, we can give a more precise answer.

June 17, 2011 at 7:26 pmOK, If you shot DV then I would definitely render to AVI using the NTSC DV codec (or PAL DV) to give to your client. That will be the best quality. Then they can determine what to do from there.

June 17, 2011 at 8:02 pmWhat John said. But don’t render as PAL if the client is in the US. -stick to NTSC DV. I’m sure John knows this but just wanted to clarify.

Yea, thanks Tim. I should have said “If you are in a PAL country use PAL, otherwise use NTSC”.
