Hey guys, it’s me again. I am the one who is doing a 100+ still image video montage with transitions for my cousins wedding. I am having problems rendering my movie to DVD. I am rendering as a MPEG-2, then encoding to DVD with a program called DVD Santa. When I play the DVD on a DVD player, the images seem to jump or flicker a bit, and the transitions are very choppy.

Does this have to do with my encoding software (DVD Santa), or am I not rendering with the correct settings in Vegas? I couldn’t seem to figure out how to customize the bitrate for the render. I am still learning and fairly new at Vegas, so I am probably doing something wrong. If somebody could give me some tips on rendering this movie smoothly, that would be great. Thank you very much!!

    Mr. WizeGuy,

Are your stills from a digital camera or did you capture them from Video?
    Could be an interlacing issue.

    Rick.

    Hi Rick,

These pictures, all 120+ of them, were scanned with my scanner at 200 dpi. It’s not major jumping, but they did jitter a bit. Even more of a concern though is the transitions are not smooth. Especially the more intense ones, they are a little choppy. I’m assuming this has to do with the bitrate of the render, but I’m still learning. Is there a way to change the bitrate, and I’m assuming VBR would be ideal? Any help would be appreciated, thank you!!

Does this have to do with my encoding software (DVD Santa)…

Most of us here use DVD Architect so, for $30, I’m not expecting too much.

…or am I not rendering with the correct settings in Vegas?

Try rendering it out as both a DV-AVI and an MPEG-2 and compare DVD Santa’s results to see which one you like better.

For render settings in Vegas, try these steps:

    DV-AVI:
After you’re done creating everything, click on the first image in the sequence, right click and choose elect Events to End and then right click again and choose Switches – Reduce Interlace Flicker.
When rendering, click the Custom tab next to the Template box and select Best in the Video Rendering Quality box in the Project tab. This should (almost) always be used on a project with stills as it helps maintain image quality.

    MPEG-2:
Since this is obviously under an hour, go for the maximum bitrate possible. Once again, click the Custom tab next to the Template box and select Best in the Video Rendering Quality box in the Project tab. Now click the Video tab. Set Video Quality to High (31). Click the Constant bit rate option and change this number to 8,000,000.

BTW, both of these can be saved as custom templates by clicking in the Template box in the Video tab, entering a new name and clicking the floppy disc (Save Template) icon. This allows you to recall them again and again without having to go through all these steps.
I do this all the time and I have at least 25 custom templates I’ve created that I re-use.

A few questions for ya. Did you render useing the MainConcept MPEG2 type and which Template did you use? Pull your rendered MPEG file onto the timeline, how do the transitions look played back there? (make sure your preview window setting is Preview auto quality).

To adjust bitrate you click on the custom button you will then have access to your bitrate settings. The default settings should be fine.

What are your Vegas project settings on this project?

I’d like someone to comment on forcing I frames as having an effect on stills – especially if they are over a quick time period.
