Render time – wow.
Hi there,
I am rendering my first film with vegas. It’s a 1080i HDV being rendered via a nested project to SD. It is 1hr 40 mins long, and I am shocked the render dialog box is telling me to expect a 12 hour render. My PC is quad core 2.6hz with 4 GB ram. I am using v7 – What am I doing wrong?

A 7.2x render does seem a bit long, but there are so many variables, it’s hard to say if it’s broken. What are you rendering out to, for example? 2-pass VBR (which means almost 2x render time)?
I’m popping in here right this minute because I’m rendering something: 00:6:15 project that is going to take 25 minutes to render (single pass to QT-ANI archive), which is about 4x render time. I’m on the same system as you, with 2GB more RAM (which won’t make a difference) and the processor OC’d to 3.0GHz (which will make some difference, but nothing radical).
So I’m not certain anything is wrong, but in any case, I’d definitely not mind waiting overnight for a best quality 2-pass VBR render on a 100 minute file. [oldmanvoice]Why, back in my day, we walked to the studio through waist deep snow and a one minute file took 10 hours to render…[/oldmanvoice]

FWIW, I found nested vegs increased render time, sometimes radically, esp after v7 (or was it v6? I can’t remember when they were introduced).

Thank you. It is going out at ‘best’ setting and 2 pass, so you might be right. Someone mentioned that nested vegs take longer, and I should set threads to 1. I love the comments re snow – excellent. Thank. martin.
