Render time for a 16 to 25 minute project using SV

The answer depends on a whole lot of variables like what is the source media, how many FX are applied, is the project SD or HD, and what is the rendering format?

What is the other NLE and does it take advantage of your GPU? Because Vegas does not, and that could be a big difference. Also, are the two renders of the same quality. I have seen other NLE’s render much faster but the output was poor quality so it didn’t really matter how fast it was.

Firstly thanks for your response…
Here goes, i’m using SD footage, The second NLE i’m referring to is Pinnacle Studio 10.8 and i’m capturing in mpeg2 format. I’m using the captured footage from Pinnacle in SV as well. Pinnacle takes about 3 to 4 minutes for completing a 16 to 25 minute project and the quality is not bad at all. I’m not using any FX if i do it is simple disolves or fades. When i’m rendering using SV using the same footage i captured from Pinnacle i render to mpeg2. Could i be bottle necking somewhere when i render using Pinnacle’s footage in SV?

OK, so here’s probably what’s going on… Pinnacle is not rendering all of the footage. It is taking the source footage that is unchanged and simply copying it to the target file. Vegas can do the same *IF* (and only if) the source and target properties match. Since Pinnacle captured the source it is probably using the same settings to render. What you would have to do is create a Vegas render template that exactly matches the source properties and then Vegas will do the same “smart render” just as fast.

However… Why are you capturing MPEG??? Pinnacle Studio does not capture high quality MPEG. Because it has to capture and encode in real-time it sacrifices quality for speed. You don’t want this. What are you capturing from? Is it a DV camera? Then you should be capturing DV AVI which is 5x better quality than DVD MPEG and maybe even more based on the bitrate of the MPEG that Pinnacle captures.

BTW, many years ago I started with Pinnacle Studio DC-10 1.5 and later purchased Pinnacle Studio 7 & 8. It was some of the most unstable software I’ve ever had the displeasure to have used. I can’t believe they are still in business but I guess there’s always another customer waiting to be taken. You’ve made a smart move in turning to Vegas. You won’t be sorry… but you will miss Title Decko and Hollywood FX… to this day I haven’t found a substitute for either in Vegas 🙁 Pinncale should just forget about their NLE and concentrate on selling their excellent plug-ins… but digress.

Let me just brief you on what we do, i’m working for the horse racing industry and after each race has finished we give the trainer or owner a complimentary dvd. Our source footage is from an OB Van to a DA from that DA we get our AV feed into Pinnacle’s USB capture device. Then we have either the option to capture AVI or MPEG2. I’ve noticed some setting when creating the disc it shows a greyed out area i’m asumming it’s the bit rate of 8.500. Is this not good for DVD?

John it’s the best move i’ve ever made with an NLE app. SV Rocks!
I agree with you on that plug-in’s and hollywood FX they should concentrate on that instead!
I’ll attempt the SV render template and let you know the outcome…

The capture bitrate of 8.5 Mbps is fine. That’s certainly DVD quality. I understand now why capturing to MPEG2 makes sense for your situation. Try and get the Vegas template to match the bitrate exactly and any other parameters and it might be able to smart render it. Good Luck.
