Took delivery on my new computer:
    AMD 64 4800+ x2

I had set up a render test using a minute of DV footage with some demanding FX and also resized and flipped it upside down.

Using Vegas 6.0b, here are comparitive render times:

    Dual Xeon 2.6 – 1 hour 25 min.
    Pentium 4, 3.0 GHz – 1 hour 15 min.
    Athlon 64 4000+ (single core) – 0 hours 32 min
    Athlon 64 4800+ dual core – 0 hours 16min

This is a HUGE improvment, but not a huge cost (about $2000).

Russell at TastyComputers.com did a great job for me building this system.

Now we do the dance of joy!

How about doing a magic bullet render test using the color reversal preset?

I don’t seem to have that preset.

How has it affected the video preview in Vegas? I have a P4-3ghzHT and I typically have to stick with Draft or Preview if I have affects added to the video.

I have always been able to work with Best preview mode, even when I used a Pentium 1.6 GHz.

Anyway… I added Color Correction and Color Curves, and get full frame rate (29.97). Turning on the waveform monitor as well slows it to about 28.7.

You must have the Magic Touch for system building, Gary. My 2.53 GHz PIV doesn’t do nearly that well.

Can you publish exact component specs for your dual core Athlon screamer?
Motherboard, RAM, processor, HDDs, video card? Key BIOS and OS settings?

    Regards,

    Doug,

I didn’t build it myself (see post above).

    It’s an AMD 64 x2 4800+ in an Asus A8N-SLI Premium Motherboard. 1 GIG (for now) PC 3200 DDR 400 .

This CPU has 2x 1 MB cache and is pretty expensive (about $1000), there are other CPUs in the line that are about half that with very good performance.

I probably should consider setting up another login that limits the number of processes running because I seldom can run best or good if effects are added. I typically have color correction or contrast adjustments made because I have a lot of VHS in my current film. I also run about 7 tracks of video/audio. I work in segments and then do the “nesting thing” (which I love).

    Hi Gary,

Sorry for the late response to your posting. I getting ready for a trip to Europe. The results are incredible compared to the P4. I wanted to ask you if you don’t mind, do you have any extra goodies added to your new system that we should know about. The $2000 price that you mentioned is a great deal. What exactly does your system consists of in detail?

    Thanks Gary,
