render question: HD for DVD but what settings for a small filesize?
Okay, I have a problem:
you see normally when rendering movies I have made I render to an external disc. I have a 1TB disc which I use a video storage as I only have 2 discs in my PC and about 80gb left on one and 50 on the other.
Now the issue was that when I bought the 1TB disc I converted it to NTFS right away before doing anything and I had been using that to render things on for a while now.. about a year the thing is 2 years old..
Well somehow allong the line it changed back into fat32, I do not know why, I do not know how but I found this out when I was trying to paste a 24 gb movie I had just rendered in HD and it said I needed more discspace while it had over 700 gb left on it. So I looked at the settings and saw Fat32..
Now the problem.. on one disc I have 80 gb left and I still have a HD clip render to make of a movie that is 40 minutes long.. now the 4 minutes one was 24GB big so you can go figure that this one is not going to fit on my pc discs at all. I can no longer render directly to my external disc because it is fat32 and it will whine about having too little discspace.
Converting, so I heard is bad it would corrupt my important video files on it. I cannot move them either because in total it is about 200GB of data that is on the disc..
So we have this:

Project settings:
HDV 720-24p (1280×720; 23,976 fps)Render settings which I had used for the 4minute 24Gb clip:
Audio: 44.100 Hz; 16 Bit; Stereo
Video: 23,976 fps; 1280x720x32, Uncompressedsaved as a .mov
You might want to punch me in the face but I have to admit I am no pro and honestly said I am a complete noob when it comes to render settings..
I tried rendering it as an .avi -> HDV 720-24p intermediate template with the Cineform HD Codec V2.8 but I can’t play it with any of my media players.
I need some help/guidelines into figuring out how I can render it properly with my used project settings but have the file size a LOT smaller but still with DVD quality (because I have to hand it in on DVD) that would fit on my hard discs.
If you do list settings please be specific or I get confused.

DVD format is MPEG2. DVD’s are only 4.7GB in size and they hold less than that because of the file structure and menus etc. FAT32 can handle files up to 4GB. It seems you should have no problem rendering your movie to MPEG2 using the DVD Architect video stream template. Then render your audio as Digital Dolby AC3. Both should easily fit within the FAT32 limitations.
BTW, there should be nothing stopping you from converting the disc back to NTFS. The conversion is non-destructive. Microsoft will tell you to back up your data first because that is always a good idea when doing conversions but, regardless of what you heard, there is nothing technically stopping you from converting it back.

I had a lot of trouble converting my discs it said there were mistakes on it so I would have to reformat first.
However I still have a 250gb disc which was also Fat32 but I managed to move everything to my 1TB disc and formated to NTFS. So now I have a disc with about 225 gb left to render my project on.
Should I use the same settings or can I use other settings now that I have more space for it.
And thank you so much for helping me, I am going to make some notes of this. I mostly do editing and animation but with rendering I get a little stuck most of the times because there is so much to choose from and for this client which even though is small time and is my first big project for an actual person I want to hand it in at the bestest quality possible and learn about it for future use

If you are delivering a DVD you should use the MPEG2 settings I recommended. That’s what DVD’s use.

I had a problem setting the audio to Digital Dolby AC3
When I use the MPEG2 with DVD Architect PAL Widescreen video stream as a template I see this, what am I supposed to fill into the menu here:

Alright I have it figured out, thank you so much John I really learned something about this.
Everything is now working properly in Adobe Encore =)
Thank you so muchfor any other peeps wondering which I only figured out later since I am a complete rendering noob.
Render the video as mpeg2 and the audio separate afterward as AC3
Then after makign sure both have the same file name import the video into Adobe Encore as a timeline then under the tab project you have to drag the audio layer into the timeline under the video. Not sure if the audio layer was under project after also importing the audio file anyway that was how it was done.

I’m sorry this wasn’t clearer in my original post but that is what the word “Then” meant in my post when I said, “Then render your audio as Digital Dolby AC3.” As you figured out, they must be rendered separately. Glad you got it working.
