Is there a recommended way to render without it taking 5+ hours? I have a 3.2 processor, 2 gig ram, matrox rt card machine that takes forever when I set my custom settings to the following:

NTSC, MPEG-2, Video Rendering Quality (Best), Video Quality (High, 31).

A wedding video of 2.5 hours takes approx 6 hours to render under these settings. It also comes out to be over 5.8 gig and I am trying to get it all on one DVD if possible. Is there a recommended setting that will allow me to shorten my render times, cut the size of my final product and of course not lose any video quality in the process.

    Thanks….Carlo

As for the size of your file, you need to reduce the bitrate to be correct for the length of your video. 2.5 hours is really pushing the amount you should put on a single DVD. Take a look at Vol 1 #7 of my newsletters for more info on this including a bitrate chart.

As for the length of time it takes, you don’t mention any of the key settings. For example, are you rendering CBR or VBR (to get 2.5 hours on a single DVD, I hope VBR). If VBR, are you doing 1-pass or 2-pass? Naturally, 2-pass will take longer than 1-pass. Is this rendering from straight AVI’s or is the timeline with all edits/effects/etc… that must also be processed?

    Edward,

It is a timeline with lots of transitions and video effects. I am using one pass, VBR. I am not familiar with Premier but my buddies tell me that they render in less than half the time for the same amount of footage?

Do I always have to use BEST, BEST rendering quality to keep picture quality great or can I set it to something that the naked eye would not notice?

Also, where do I find your newsletters?

    Thanks again..

You have to take into account that it is not only converting to MPEG2, it is also applying all of your effects. Both of the processes take time (Plus some effects take longer than others to apply).

Generally speaking, you do NOT need to render at “BEST”. Good and Best are really misnomers. Use best when resizing photos. When working with straight video, you can stick with good.

As for the newsletters, just click on the picture beneath my name.

How about rendering at 31 Best. Is that also a misnomer? Can I stick with the default 15 or does that depreciate video quality? Also, does the rendering time change when these settings are changed? I find that they do..

    Thanks.

NO – You MUST change that to 31.

Actually, it sounds like you’re using the “Default” MPEG2 setting. You don’t want to use that one. It won’t give good results.

Start with one of the DVDA presets and adjust from there.
