I imported my completed 30 second spot into After Effects to add a 3 second effect but when I hit the render preview button it only previews about 18 of the 30 seconds. I can start the preview point at different areas but I still only get about 18 seconds of preview.

Does anybody know why? I looked for longer preview settings throughout the prefrences settings but could not find anything.

    Please help. Thanks you.

your ram previews are limited to the amount of ram that you have… more specifically the amount of ram that is allocated as the ram cache. until ae goes 64-bit you are limited to about 60% of 3gb, you can increase that 60% a bit, but that will be taking ram away from the image buffer and ram that ae needs to render a given frame…

to get longer previews you can decrease the preview quality setting (going from ‘full’ to ‘half’ will quadruple the number of frames that ae can cache). or, in the time controls palette, set the previews to skip frames (skiping 1 frame will double the duration that ae can store in ram).
