Render multiple clips from .avi to .mpeg
Posted by Carlo Simone on December 6, 2006 at 3:29 pmHello all,
I have over 47 gig of one wedding I shot last month. This is a non edit job, he just wants the clips. Now instead of dumping 47 gig onto a removable drive, what is the best solution? I was thinking to render out all clips to .MPEG and then burning to DVD so he can view all individual clips. Is there an easy way to select all files and render over night or does it have to happen one by one?? Thanks..

December 6, 2006 at 4:11 pmAssuming that this is DV footage, you have about 3.6 hours of footage, so better to divide it into 2 discs.
Just create a project with all the clips for one disc in sequence. You can create chapter stops (if you are using DVDA to author)by placing markers at the start of each separate clip (Excalibur can do this automatically). Then render the project to Mpeg2/AC3.

December 6, 2006 at 7:32 pmIf he doesnt have a DV camcorder or capability to capture the footage from the MiniDV tapes, Your fastest, easiest, and best solution is to just put it on your smallest hard drive, then charge him the cost of a new 300GB hard drive for you to replace it with. It doesn’t even have to be removable or portable, just use a standard one and take it out. Depends on how computer saavy you both are.

December 6, 2006 at 7:46 pmpersonally I’d just hand him the tapes and be done with it. He’d be better off with the original tapes and buying a 2 or 3 hundred dollar miniDV camera (if he doesn’t have 1. He can use Movie Maker or IMovie and let him do his thing.
Otherwise if you’re going to burn to DVD why not just put the clips in order split it as Gary suggested and burn 2 disc-why put chapters in? If he’s going to RIP it and edit it he’ll probably want to see all the footage thats there anyway. Even better, if you have a stand alone burner, just dump the tapes to that and burn as you go. split it at about an hour and fortyfive minutes-label them part 1 and part 2 hand them to him and your work is done.

December 6, 2006 at 8:11 pmOut of curiosity, is this a new era where the bride/groom can hire a videographer to record their wedding, and then they get a hard drive with all the original-quality un-edited footage?
What can be charged for something like that? When I got married, I remember the photographer wanted some outrageous amount for the negatives (which is similar to giving a hard drive with all the original video footage). In hind sight, I wish we did take the negatives (didn’t have much cash when we were getting started).
Anyway, just wondering if this is something that’s happening more these days…

December 6, 2006 at 10:51 pmEvery client can request what they want. We do many “shoot only” jobs for a variety of clients, (not weddings) for individuals to foreign news services. They tell us what tape format and sometimes what camera they want, give us a check, and we shoot and give them the tape. I never have given anyone a hard drive, but if they pay for the drive and time to capture the tape…..sold!

December 7, 2006 at 12:38 pmGeorge, I have never had the request, but I would charge them my standard day rate for shooting the footage, then hand it over. Just the same as other work for hire. I have shot weddings for other videographers, then handed them the tapes. I would not charge and EXTRA fee just because they had the masters. I think photographers go a bit overboard with the whole copyright issue, and they are only hurting themselves.

December 7, 2006 at 6:26 pmHi Charlie and DV Memories,
Thanks for the info — seems I might request that next time I need to hire a videographer (I can handle the editing and authoring, so it would be great to just get a hard drive with the video files already on it — hopefully first-generation video files like dv .avi if shot on mindDV).
It’s definitely something I’ll keep open as an option in the future. And if I know anyone with a son/daughter getting married, I’ll pass this along as a potential option when they are looking for their wedding videographer.
Thanks again,
George
