I’m running After Effects CS4 on an 8-core mac pro, and for whatever reason I have a lag every time I render. It goes like this:

make a change, hit “0”, WAIT, then it starts rendering. Sometimes the wait is 5 seconds or more.

This can be agitating, and it was never the case on my old G5.

Any thoughts on what could be the cause of this?

could be the multiple processes feature starting up (the processes have to launch, etc.)

To add to what Bruce is saying…

If you are starving your cores of RAM, they start up when you start a render (such as a RAM preview), starve to death, shut down, and then try again the next time that you start a render.

That’s why you should really read this: “Performance tip: DOn’t starve your software of RAM”.
