  • Render issues – low memory.

Posted by Martin Phillips on February 17, 2010 at 11:47 pm

    Hi everyone,

I have a big issue to resolve. I have a 2 hour wedding on the timeline (shot at 720p 50fps). I have edited it, although my system struggled a bit with multi layers and when using multicam. Anyway, the project has been rendered out to DVD. Now I want to make a bluray copy, and this is where the issues have started. I keep getting a low memory error when rendering. I have tried rendering sections ie prep, arrivals etc – some have worked, but there is no logic to when it fails – it can be 1 minute in or 20 minutes in. I have check my memory settings in XP and set them both to 4990. I have 4 gb of ram on a quad core 2.6 PC. Any help really welcome. Martin.

Set them where? What exactly are you referring to? Also what version and build of Vegas are you using?

“Low Memory” is an error message from Windows that means that you are low on actual memory or virtual memory.

Try setting Vegas to use only two cores. You only have 1GB for each core, so that could cause your low memory warning.

    Hi John,
My computer, prefences, virtual memorey, advanced, settings. There I have set both min and max to the recommended setting of 4990. I am using Vegas 9.c.

    Did you try network rendering?
I have noticed that project that render fine with Vegas pro 8, give sometimes this memory error in Vegas pro 9. Even if there is no network available for rendering, selecting the network render option (in the render tab) many times solves the problem.

    Hi there,

Yes changed it – no difference im afraid. I have even tried uninstalling 9.0c and reinstalling 9.0b – still same issue.

    Hi Theo,

I will try that tonight… what settings should i use in the network render dialog box? From what you have said, perhaps i should install Vegas 8.0 and give that a try – will 9.0 projects open in 8.0 ?

    Regards
    Martin

No, a Vegas 9 project will not open in Vegas 8. It will work only the other way around.
And about the network rendering, since you are not going to use other computers for the network rendering, you don’t have to set up a rendering computer.

Actually it’s worse than that. He is using XP which means that each process only gets 2GB of memory regardless of how much physical memory is in the machine. So that means that his Quad Core is limited to 256MB per rendering thread/core. That’s not a lot of memory for HD work.

What you need is Windows 7 64-bit so that you can make use of all of the memory you have. In general, you should not be using a 32-bit OS with a Quad Core if you want to make use of multi-threaded rendering. As Steve said, limit your rendering threads so that each gets more memory.

Hi John, I have a new workstation on order (i7 with 12gb ram). But what I don\’t understand is that a very simular project, shot with the same 2 cameras, rendered fine just a few months ago – so I\’m starting to think this could be a Vegas issue. I will hold fire until the new system arrives – I assume I will be able to render out a project created in 32bit in a 64bit version? Martin.

Vegas Pro 9.0 has certainly had it’s share of rendering issues with running out of memory so I wouldn’t rule that out either. 9.0c fixed some of them but there may be more.

Yes, but only as long as you didn’t use any 3rd party plug-ins that don’t have a 64-bit version. The projects are compatible but the 3rd party plug-ins and codecs might not be available in 64-bit. If you stuck with just the Vegas FX’s and codecs you should be fine.
