Render Farms or alternatives?
I’m facing a deadline right now and due to some setbacks, I’m faced with a huge problem.
I need to render many many hours of HDV footage into many different WMV formats.
Such as take a 10 minute HDV clip and convert it into a 10 minute Hi-Res WMV, 3 minute medium res WMVs and 30 second low res WMVs.
Now creating templates to render this puppies out isn’t a problem. My problem is that it takes about a full DAY just to render out a 10 minute clip that way.
Now, I have about 100 or so clips to do this with. So as you can see, time becomes an issue here.
I currently have 4 computers to work with and 2 MACs.
I thought about setting up a Watch Folder so as to create a render farm, but heard about ALL the problems people have been having + the added fact that I believe AE render farms only render frames and not movies (which is pointless to me since I need WMVs in the long run).
So I need you guys… the pros… the brains! to help me out here and see if you could help me find a solution (other than buying a dozen more computers).
By the way, my deadline is in 2 weeks.

So, is that 4 PCs?
If you had all Macs, I’d look into using Compressor and Qmaster:

If it’s a mix, I’d just had one clip off to each computer and just sit and drink a lot of coffee. Don’t bother with the Watch Folder, it won’t be worth it at all.. like you said, it only output image sequences.
