  • Render Errors in Resolve 9

Posted by Florian Gintenreiter on August 2, 2012 at 11:20 am

I have been playing with Resolve 9 yesterday and found it to be a really cool upgrade. However I have had some issues with strange render-artifacts: In extreme highlights and darks the pixels get solarised either yellow or black. It’s not persistent, but a couple of frames per clip bear that artifact. So if I play it back some frames flash.

I can see these flashes, while working in Resolve both in the GUI as well as on the output of my DeckLink card AND it’s on the rendered files as well.

I’m on a MacPro running 10.7.4 with a ATI Radeon HD 5870 and had no such Problems with Version 8.2.1 of Resolve.

I presume this is a Beta-Issue, but maybe someone has run into it as well and found a fix.

    cheers

    Florian

I render at the lowest speed (1% of full speed) and had no artifacts so far.
I hope someone comes with a better solution/answer than this one:

How/Where do you set render-speed in Resolve?

At the DELIVER page, under Render Settings (left side of screen), you have Presets, then Output. Is the last setting on Output. You set the speed there before you hit Add Job to the Render Queue.

Hi, can you let us know which format I’d your source, and render, resolution and also on the color page, do you get realtime playback?

The source is 1080p25 ProResHQ most of the shots are from a C300 recorded on an Atomos Samurai and some shots are from a GoPro, but converted to ProRes for editing. I’m outputting ProresHQ, too.

I get about 18fps, which is what I got in Resolve 8 with a comparable count of nodes on the same GFX card.

For what it’s worth I ran into this same thing today as well. The outside window in the shot (highlight) had a black splotch that would come in at seemingly random frames.

I noticed that the splotch occurred where two power windows happened to overlap. I adjusted one of the windows to not overlap and the problem disappeared.

I was also using 1080p25 Pro Res 422HQ from an Arri Alexa.

    Hope this helps.

I downgraded to 8.2.2 for the moment, because I got to get a job out the door. Will resume playing with 9, soon.

There looks to be a few OpenCL issues fixed in 10.8 as we don’t see the issues you report. The 10.7.4 also looks fine with CUDA cards so I suggest an upgrade to 10.8 is the quickest solution.

I am too chicken to upgrade my production machine to 10.8.0 although I don’t see any problems on my notebook, where I do the testing. I’ll wait for 10.8.1 or until Blackmagic fixes R9 for 10.7.4 Meanwhile I use Resolve 8.2.2 and am a happy camper.
