can you use the render engine to help push a ram preview, or is it only for output? I am just annoyed that I can only use 3 of my 12 gigs for AE. Got any ideas, plugins, workflows, anything?

The RAM is only for storing the calculated frames. Adding external RAM won’t increase the size of the preview movie.

RAM Preview movies can be saved to disk, that allows you to splice many of them together. However, I’m surprised at how often this “Ae can’t use all my RAM ” issue comes up around here and other forums. How do you suppose we all got along doing 2k (the frame size limit up until CS3 IIRC) previews when a couple megs of RAM were all a fiscally responsible shop could afford? Careful workflow preparation, prerendering, use of proxies, and a thorough understanding how to use the limitations of the tools we had at our disposal. the effort wasn’t trivial but it wasn’t difficult.

as david mentions, more than 3-4gb of ram won’t increase the ram preview durations.

however, if you have multiple processors, enable multiprocessing in ae and disable opengl for previews then your ram previews will be rendered using multiple cores and those cores will be using as much as 4gb per core (3.5gb on mac).
