Why are there so many different render types and what’s the difference between them all? When I was still using my g4 it seemed that I only saw two colors, green (preview) and red (needs render), in the render bar. Now that I’m editing on a g5 I’m getting orange (unlimited), greyish-green (full), yellow (proxy), as well as the green and red.

Is there really a significant difference between all of these? Obviously, red you need to render to see it at all. But it seems all of the other colors you can kind of get an idea of what it looks like without rendering, but you can get an actual depiction of the effect with rendering. What’s the point of all of this?

This is only out of curiousity. Thanks for taking the time to read this.

They’re just indicators. You can ignore them if you want. Anything that needs to be rendered will have to be rendered for output. Green means real-time preview. Red means must render for playback. Orange means real-time preview but with dropped frames, so switch off the dropped frames warning. Yellow means real-time proxy settings, basically it will only play the default version of the effect or transition, not all the detail of what you applied.

    All the best,

    Tom
