Newbie question, why is it you lose your rendered cache when you turn off then back on a layer? I’m coming from Avid DS and it would instantly re-connect to your rendered files. It seems like it would be pretty easy to implement.

Because that’s just the way it is, unfortunately. It’s been that way since FCP 1.2.5 and it’s still there today. If it was so easy to implement, we’d have it by now. All I know is that FCP uses a different media management structure than AVID and I’m sure that has something to do with it.

The best way is to not try to do this the way you do it on an Avid. Toggle clip enable on individual clips to make them invisible, rather than turn off the entire track. This way you only cause the clips you select to become unrendered. Remember also, undo will restore your renders, if you change your mind.

Agreed, its a bit clunky, but you shouldnt lose any renders unnecessarily.
