Ok, probably world’s dumbest question but I’m wondering what happens if you export before rendering?

I’ve got these Apple Pro Res timelines around 5mins each with quite a few filters on them and I’m wondering if i can export directly to a QT Movie (reference) to burn to iDVD without rendering first i.e. does rendering happen as part of the export process? Or is it faster to render then export?

When testing, these 5 minute files are taking several hours to export to QT as it is, so I must be doing something wrong.

If you export before you render, FCP will render during the export, taking loads of time, and then renders won’t be there in your timeline when you’re done. That’s not a great way to accomplish your work.

I agree with David, always best to render as you go otherwise it takes longer on the other end, albeit I know many colleueges who work this way and take their lunch break during the export/render ‘all in one’.

Although I’d much rather render as I go for a faster and smoother export.
