Render automatically converts 23.976 to 29.97
Hi There-
I am working in a 23.976 project with DV/DVCPRO 23.976 material that originated in MPEG Streamclip (DVD extracting). When I go to render out using the DV/24p setting, it automatically converts it to 29.97.
Filed Order is set to lower, 3:2 Pulldown is off, I tell it to use 23.976 as the frame rate, and to no avail, it keeps rendering out at 29.97. Of course I can use a different codec, but I would really like to understand why I can’t render this out at 23.976 frames.
Any info would be greatly appreciated.

i believe that dv and dvcpro (and other dv variants) need, or should, conform to ntsc standards… so 29.97fps. probably due to being a tape-based format.
as far as going to another codec/format, there may be better options depending on you destination (ie, tape, dvd, web, broadcast tv, etc…)

Thanks for you quick response. I understand what you say above, but still don’t understand why, if the footage is interpreted as 23.98, and it is recognized in QT as 23.98, won’t after effects render it out as such? I forgot to mention that I am bringing this footage back into a FCP timeline set at 23.98 NTSC/DV.

Hi Dave. To answer your questions,
1. I ripped a 23.98 DVD
2. The frame rate of the footage according to QT Movie Inspector, AE and the FCP browser is 23.98.
3. I used the DV/DVCPRO-NTSC codec. I have had issues in the past when exporting to Pro Res from MPEG Streamclip with FCP. Clips not playing back in RT, green vertical line running down the side of the frame, overall image color gets degraded when playing back from timeline, etc. (probably another forum discussion for that one). That is why I have stuck with the DV/DVCPRO codec for DVD extracting.Let me know if you have any thoughts.

This is exactly it.
Pre-CS5, After Effects was less than rigorous about output module constraints. With CS5 and later, AE sticks to the specs. See https://forums.adobe.com/thread/706576?decorator=print&displayFullThread=true for more.
That aside, I’d try to sort out your ProRes issues. It’s a much better codec. Two generations of DV re-encoding on top of MPEG-2 from DVD is throwing away a lot of quality.
