You want to use the DVD Architect Widescreen template for PAL under MainConcept MPEG2. Then render the audio as Dolby Digital AC3 and give both files the same name (just different extensions). These will feed into DVD Architect to create PAL DVD’s.

I just checked and it puts the “=” alongside the “DVD Architect PAl video stream”, I will instead swap to use the one you advise “DVD Architect PAl Widescreen video stream”

Do I set ‘output type” to be DVD or mpeg2 ?

One thing I am still unclear of under the options, is the Video bit rate.
I use VBR 2-pass ( and although not an option here normally tick to use my CUDA card)

For this template it defaults to

Max bps 9,5000,000
Avg bps 6,000,000

Is there a guide somewhere that lists the bps setting for optimum quality for given output format ?

If anyone has a link to point me to rather than have to explain something that perhaps should be obvious to me feel free 🙂

On the Dolby Digital AC-3 (*.ac3) … there are 2 options:
Stereo DVD
Stereo DVD, AGC on

Any guide as to when AGC would or should be used ?

While the theoretcal maximum bitrate for DVD is 9.8Mbps, I would stay well below that if you are distributing to clients. If you find that the DVD is skipping on some players, it may be because the bit rate is too high. Just because all DVD Players should support 9.8 Mbps it doesn’t mean they all do.

The average bitrate determines the file size. 6 Mbps is considered normal. You can lower it to get more on a disk but quality will suffer. You can certainly raise it if you have enough disc space for the length of your video. In fact, you can use CBR 8 Mbps if your video will fit. I think you’re on the right path with using 2-Pass and VBR.

I’ve never used the AC3 templates with AGC. I guess you would use it if your audio was all over the place and you wanted to get it under control but this is best taken care of in your editor.
