I’m running a Mac OSX 10.6.6. 2x 2.4 GHz Quad-Core Intel Zeon, 6GB Ram. I still have plenty of storage on the computer. (Over 600GBs). I’m running FCP, and I am running through a couple different videos. I want to splice together good parts of each video. But I have to “preRender” to preview it. It used to take a couple minutes to render out so I could preview withing FCP, but now the same amount of work requires over an hour to preview. But on the good side, when i do my final render, it takes a lot less time. I there a setting that needs to change? I only need to preview, not fully render just to see what I’m working with. Has anyone else had this problem?

You need to set your sequence to match you footage in FCP. When you drop your first clip in the time line, FCP should tell you that “the sequence does not match you file format, would you like to change your seq to match your video” (or something similar to this, anyway) Click yes and no more rendering…. unless of course you are trying to put a non supported file format into the time line, then you would do best to trans code everything to ProRes first and then import and edit from there.
