  • Render AE (After Effects) linked project in Premiere Pro (CS5.5)

Posted by Brian Berneker on August 14, 2011 at 11:51 pm

After my less than amazing experience with FCP X, I’ve decided to try and get more familiar with Premiere Pro.

Given that one of FCP-X’s major selling points it round-trip workflow with Motion (which I never use, since AE is way more powerful) I have a particular interest in round tripping my Premiere workflow with After Effects. I’ve been able to place an AE project/comp into the Premiere timeline but it does not scrub well because it is of course not pre rendered (like it would be in less integrated workflow where only output rendered clips are used).

Is there a setting or something I can click to force Premiere to render linked AE clips (preferably in the background) so that I can (eventually) scrub it live while editing the rest of the project?

    Thanks in advance guys!!

    Hi Brian,

It’s not going to happen in the background, although that would make a great feature request.

You can set your work area, Alt+[ and alt+] around the clip and go to Sequence > Render entire work area. I actually created a keyboard shortcut for that function using the Enter Key.

Is there no “render selected” option?

Can you at least have it render low res (fast) proxies like AE can, maybe by adjusting the settings in the AE project itself?

You could certainly render from AE to any format you like and use “replace with clip” in your sequence, but there is no “one Click” method. You can also change the sequence wide preview format.

Often, simple AE like lower thirds or titles often don’t need rendering to play realtime, so i use dynamic link for those and render the rest to uncompressed.

If you have a lot of clips, check out this Video Copilot preset.

    As Vince said, no.

See this page for details of render commands.
