    Hello,
I am afraid I have been thrown into the world of FCP without a life jacket. So please be patient that I don’t know the correct phrasing.
    Here is my question:
I have captured 30 minutes of footage that I need to edit. I have the master clip labled as Jan 12th. I know that I can mark in and out points in the browser window, grap that footage and put in on the timeline. But how do I rename that clip? For example Intro, Contact, resolution, etc. These are the items I am having to cut and trim from the 30 min of raw footage. As you know, when I rename the new clip it changes the name of the master clip.

    Please help the newbie

    Thanks

    Jennifer

What you are trying to do is called “creating a subclip,” which is done by making in and outs, then hit Command+U. That adds the new subclip to the browser and also highlights the text to ready it for renaming.

    Thanks So Much

The only thing that worries me is I lose my handles. Will this not affect my ability to add transitions later?

The subclip is just a portion of your Master Clip. All your handles are still there.

This is important to understand because you cannot delete that master clip or you lose all your subclips. Also, if that Master Clip gets corrupted in anyway, all of your subclips will also go offline.

Thank you guys. I thought I had prepped for this project but all my notes just don’t fit the problems that have come up. Thanks again!

Don ‘t cut the subclips tight. Leave them loose, usually from shot change to shot change. Then mark up the subclips for editing into the timeline.

If you prefer you can mark up your clips, then convert them to master clips, and then rename them.

    All the best,

    Tom
